silver lining
The silver lining of the crash was all the great chicago cyclists I met because of it. I now volunteer for the Crash Hotline, go on group rides, met great people and have a lot of new friends. At some level, I’m a better cyclist for going through it.
The crash took me from being a solo-cyclist to part of the community. While I’d rather have not been hit at all, I’m grateful...

I’ve signed the release and it’s done. Other than the insurance company cutting the check, it is done. Today marks the end of crash —>—> insurance —> lawyers from my September 10, 2010 crash.
Oddly, today was the first day since my crash that I did a full bike commute instead of a doing a train/bike combo.
t-shirt drying by my desk
means that I rode my bike all the way to work today.
Even got in early enough to use the bike room.
When I did something like “Another One Rides The Bus,” I would crank out the...

why we highlight the bad
baddeal:
There are lots of restaurant critics. I’m proud to be one of them. There are fewer deal critics. There needs to be more of them. That’s because a growing number of Americans are using social coupon sites like Groupon to learn about restaurants.
Analyzing a deal is difficult. In my full-time job as a food critic, I’ll visit a restaurant 3-5 times, sometimes over the course of a year, in...
from Team Make Your Mom A Bike Commuter
Rode my bike, wore my new helmet, downtown to breakfast on the trail there and back except for the few blocks that are not on the trail, I feel so much safer on the trail. no cars. no car doors.

settled
My lawyer is calling the insurance company today to wrap up my case.
For this to all be done in under a year - wow. I was ready for 3-4 more years of waiting… so… who wants to come over this weekend and harvest parts off my Schwinn before I let the scrappers take it?
(I want the pedals, saddle and help knowing what else is worth salvaging.)
Bike-Part Vending Machine
highheelsandtwowheels:
“The kiosk, called Bike Fixtation, offers basic bike tools, a repair stand, and a vending machine full of useful goodies, including tubes, lights, patch kits, and snacks.”
Y’all! Snacks! I mean…bike parts. Bike parts are good. Snacks or not, this is still awesome.
Thanks for the link Margaret!

voicemail
My lawyer called while I was in Israel and there is a settlement offer on the table for my injuries in September’s crash.
Lawyer Jim is a good one.
farmer phase
On twitter, we had an early morning talk about having a “slutty phase” and if there’s an age range for it.
Then I suggested we rename it to the Farmer Phase to get rid of the judgy mcjudgalot sound of using word slut.

home
Got to Chicago. A couple friends picked me up from the airport and whisked me away to MOODY’s where I rewarded them with belgium chocolate.
I went home. Sat on the couch. Moved to my bed at 5 and convinced myself that I would just nap for a few minutes.
Other than a few phone calls, I slept until 5am this morning and my cats cuddled with me the whole night.
Now I’m sitting...

I don't want to know the converstion rate
becuase I think I just bought hundreds of dollars of chocolate.
I couldn’t find a way to put the horse in my luggage, if I had I would be riding it instead of my bike next week.

You’re not dating them. You’re not sleeping with them. But whoever you are dating or sleeping with will probably get inexplicably jealous of them. Your SF is your “When-the-hell-are-you-two-just-going-get-married?!” friend. And sometimes you think maybe you just should. There’s a part of your heart that they’ve got on lock-down and nobody else can touch it. Think Julia Roberts and...

11th hour meet cute
I ate dinner on the patio of a restaurant tonight in Tel Aviv. I was staring at the crosswalk when a man got in my line of sight, caught my eye and waved. I’ve met so many people this week, that I thought I just wasn’t placing me.
He came over to my table, said a bunch of stuff in Hebrew and I blinked a few times and said, “Anglit?” (English?)
He said that he’d seen...
making things
Joneses. We deal with death by making things.
My dad is spending the weekend faux-finishing my grandma’s coffin.
I had a wonderfuly romantic date last night.
devoidofdigital:
I met up with the girl I really like (sadly she has a boyfriend) at her house. We rode our bikes to a nearby golf course and got there just before sunset. We sat at the top of a hill overlooking the city, played a silly little card game, drank a bottle of wine, and hung out til midnight, then I rode with her back to her house. It was amazing.
Most great (un)dates involve a...
no Haifa
I walked half a block, stopped at a cafe for breakfast and reading. Finished and started toward the train station, turned around and went back to my apartment.
Last night I walked out of a party that was full of people I know and love and went to the Old City in Jerusalem. The party was so overcrowded that it seemed dangerous, but I missed the chance to say goodbye to many friends.
Instead I...
homesick
I’ve never wanted my trip to Israel to be over before my flight before, but I would be perfectly happy if I were packing right this moment.
Nothing bad has happened here, but my grandma died in the states. The funeral is on Monday. I probably need to find someone willing to roadtrip to a funeral to keep me awake while I drive (or drive me part of the way there). Jet lag + 8 hours of driving...
I'm ready to come home
I don’t usually get homesick on trips to Israel. In large part, I think, that Israel has been my goal for the past few years. That I was trying to move here, trying to build a business here, trying to make a name for myself.
That isn’t the case anymore. I’ve got both feet back in Chicago. I’ve taken a job that I don’t see myself leaving for at least five years, which...
bicycles in tel aviv
No, I haven’t been able to ride since I’ve been here, but it seems cycling is really picking up. I don’t know if it is because this is my first trip as a cyclist so I’m noticing it more or if it is really picking up.
I’m seeing folding bikes everywhere, bike share racks that only have 1-2 bikes of the 20 left available and more people riding in the streets as...
officiating a wedding
I’m officiating a wedding in July - what do you think makes for a great wedding ceremony?
Also - they don’t want to do the unity candle - what’s a good alternative?
